Tonga, who play Scotland in the first of four matches this Autumn, last faced Scotland at Murrayfield 20 years ago in a 43-20 win for the home side in 2001. The teams have faced each other since twice since then, both in Scotland, with a win apiece in fixtures played in Aberdeen in 2012 and Kilmarnock in 2014.

It has been 10 years since Scotland last downed the world’s number one ranked side, the Springboks, on home soil, though there have been some closely contested battles both home and away in the interim. The last time South Africa came to BT Murrayfield was in 2018, when the Scots narrowly lost to the team that would go onto lift the Rugby World Cup in Japan the following year. Tries from Peter Horne and Hamish Watson weren’t quite enough, and the scots were squeezed out 20-26.
